Young dolphin rescued after stranding at Sakhu
The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) reported that the animal was discovered on the beach in front of ‘White Beach’, south of Naithon, yesterday (Apr 19).
A young female spinner dolphin was rescued by marine officials after stranding on the beach in front of ‘White Beach’, south of Naithon, Phuket, on April 19, the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) reported. The animal, identified as not yet fully mature, was found in a weakened state and taken for urgent veterinary care.
Medical Assessment and Ongoing Care
Marine officers recorded the dolphin’s length at 175cm and weight at approximately 26.5kg. Initial examinations revealed it was underweight, with a body condition score of 2 out of 5, and unable to swim normally.
Veterinarians noted abrasion wounds along the dolphin’s side, likely caused by the stranding. The animal was also dehydrated, suffering from low blood sugar, and suspected to have an underlying infection.
After stabilisation at the scene, the dolphin was transported to the Siritharn Rare Marine Animal Rescue Center. Officials said the dolphin is now under continuous observation and intensive treatment, with efforts focused on rehabilitation and eventual release.
