An Australian driver was arrested in Kamala, Phuket, on May 2, 2026, after a viral video showed a dangerous red-light violation at a busy intersection. Kamala police said the footage captured a black sedan with red stripes blocking the entrance and exit lanes at Khok Yang Intersection while ignoring traffic signals and disrupting traffic.
Police identified the driver only as Mr. Wayne, an Australian national. He was taken into custody shortly after the incident, and a urine test confirmed he was not under the influence of drugs.
Charges filed under Thailand's Road Traffic Act
Police said Mr. Wayne was charged under Section 22 of Thailand’s Road Traffic Act for disobeying a red light. That offense carries a fine of up to 1,000 baht.
He was also charged under Section 70 in conjunction with Section 147 for failing to stop at the designated line when the red light is on. That charge also carries a fine of up to 1,000 baht.
Police said he was fined and formally prosecuted under both provisions.
