Cabinet backs B6.4bn Phuket Health Hub project through 2030

Thailand’s Cabinet has approved a B6.4 billion Phuket Health Hub project, Deputy Government Spokesperson Ploytalay Laksmisangchan said on Apr. 28, with the four-year plan set to run from fiscal 2027 to 2030. The initiative is intended to strengthen healthcare services across Phuket and the Andaman region, address shortages of qualified staff and cut referrals for complex cases to hospitals elsewhere in Thailand.

Officials said the plan is designed as a regional health system upgrade rather than a single construction project. It is aimed at improving treatment capacity, expanding specialist services and bringing more advanced care closer to the Andaman coast.

Five-part project centers on tertiary hospital

The Andaman Health Center project has five components: Andaman Health College, Songklanagarind Thai Traditional Medicine Hospital in Phuket, Songklanagarind Medical Technology Service Center in Phuket, Songklanagarind Digital Dentistry Center in Phuket and Songklanagarind Hospital in Phuket.

The central element is Songklanagarind Hospital Phuket, a tertiary-level specialized hospital expected to open in 2030. The hospital carries a B4.85bn budget, including B2.91bn from the government and B1.94bn from non-budgetary sources, with additional funding allocated for medical equipment and instruments.

Training, research and advanced treatment capacity

Authorities said the new network is intended to support treatment for complex diseases, precision medicine, telemedicine services and the training of health science personnel. Prince of Songkla University has previously said the facility could serve more than 170,000 patients annually while producing healthcare workers matched to regional demand.

The university is also developing medical education programs that combine language training with advanced technologies. Officials said construction is expected to begin under the 2027 fiscal budget, building on earlier Cabinet-backed plans for a major Songklanagarind facility and expanding them into a broader system covering education, research and specialized treatment.
