A foreign couple were deported after a public sex act in a parked tuk-tuk in Patong, Phuket, with authorities confirming the incident happened at about 5am on Sunday, May 3. Phuket Immigration and Patong Police said the pair were removed from Thailand after legal proceedings over the incident, which drew widespread criticism after images circulated online.

The two were later identified as Mr Ruben, 41, a Spanish national, and Ms Cynthia, 43, a Peruvian national.
Investigators from Patong Police Station, working with Phuket Immigration officers, tracked them down and apprehended them at 8:30pm on Monday, May 4. When confronted with photographic evidence, both admitted they were the people shown in the images.
They were initially charged with jointly committing an act likely to cause public embarrassment by exposing their bodies or engaging in indecent conduct in a public place.
Immigration officials said the case was handled seriously because of its impact on Thailand’s tourism and cultural image. Authorities are also compiling information to have the pair blacklisted, which would prevent them from re-entering the country.
The operation was carried out under orders from senior Immigration Bureau officials, including commanders from Immigration Division 6 and Phuket Immigration leadership.
Phuket Immigration said it is closely monitoring visitor behaviour and will take firm action over conduct deemed harmful to public order or the province’s reputation.
