Foreign couple held over sex act in moving tuk tuk in Patong

A foreign couple were held in Phuket on Sunday, May 4, after a viral video showed them engaging in a sex act while riding in a moving tuk tuk in Patong. Patong police said the pair were located after officers opened an investigation triggered by the footage, which was recorded by a passerby and widely shared online.

The clip showed a man in a white shirt seated inside the vehicle while a woman was on the floor performing oral sex. Police confirmed both people are foreign nationals but did not release further details about their identities.

Video spread online and drew criticism

The footage was posted on Sunday, May 3, by the Facebook page แฉยับ ภูเก็ต with a caption questioning whether the conduct reflected only a small minority of visitors. The post referred to broader debate over behaviour in the province, including comments citing 0.1% as a share of the total.

A Thai woman travelling by motorcycle behind the tuk tuk recorded the video and commented while filming. In the clip, she said she had never personally encountered such behaviour before and asked why the couple could not wait until reaching a hotel.

Online reaction targeted both the couple and the driver. Some social media users also speculated that the woman may have been a sex worker, though officials have not confirmed that.

Police action follows earlier tuk tuk cases

Officers said legal action would be taken against the couple, but no specific charges or penalties have been announced. The case adds to a series of public misconduct incidents involving tuk tuks in Patong.

Last week, another group of foreign tourists drew criticism after exposing themselves while travelling in a tuk tuk there. In February, a French couple were arrested for sexual activity in a tuk tuk on Patong Hill, then deported and blacklisted after legal proceedings.
