A French woman died after a motorbike crash in Karon at about 8:30pm on Wednesday, May 6, police said. The collision happened on the curve on the north side of Nong Harn lake in Phuket as a Dutch rider and his passenger travelled south from Patong into Karon.
Karon Police said the woman was riding pillion on a Bangkok-registered motorcycle driven by Dutch national Lauzon Ismail Talal. Both suffered serious injuries and were taken to Patong Hospital, where the woman later died.
Police say rider crossed into van's lane
Investigators said initial findings and CCTV footage showed the motorcycle rider lost control while negotiating the curve and crossed into the wrong lane. The bike then crashed head-on into a Phuket-registered van driven by Somyot Thammawat, which police said was travelling on the correct side of the road.
Pol Lt Col Eaksak Khwanwan, an investigating officer at Karon Police Station, was notified by the station’s radio centre and went to the scene with Karon Police Superintendent Pol Col Pathapi Srichai.
Police found the van damaged and the motorcycle heavily damaged at the scene.
Officers examined the crash site, prepared a scene map and continued collecting evidence. Police identified Mr Lauzon Ismail Talal as responsible for the crash while the investigation continued.
