GSTC 2026 in Phuket closes with Bahamas handover

More than 500 delegates from over 50 countries gathered in Phuket from April 21-24 for the Global Sustainable Tourism Conference (GSTC) 2026, which closed last night with a formal handover to the Bahamas as host for GSTC 2027. The event, held at the Kata Thani Phuket Beach Resort, positioned Phuket as a central platform for advancing standards-based sustainability in the tourism sector.

Bahamas Announced as Next Host

The closing ceremony included an official invitation from the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Investment and Innovation, confirming the country will host GSTC 2027 in May next year. Bahamian officials expressed their readiness to welcome delegates, receiving positive response from attendees.

The farewell dinner was attended by Phuket Governor Nirat Pongsithavorn, international delegates, and conference organisers, marking the formal conclusion of the event.

Focus on Sustainable Practices and Outcomes

Workshops and seminars addressed climate adaptation, disaster recovery, balanced tourism growth, skills development, and waste management in hotels. Delegates also explored ways to improve accessibility for tourists and strengthen resilience in cities and communities.

The conference incorporated carbon reduction measures and a tree-planting initiative aimed at environmental restoration. Post-conference field trips across Phuket allowed participants to observe community-based, cultural, and marine sustainability initiatives in practice.

Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Panjaroenvorakul, who opened the event on April 22, reiterated Thailand’s commitment to quality, low-carbon tourism and broader income distribution to local communities. TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatpaiboon said hosting GSTC 2026 reinforces Thailand’s ambition to lead in sustainable tourism through international cooperation and knowledge exchange.
