Heavy rain forecast for 15 northern provinces; Bangkok faces 40% rain chance
Heavy rain forecast for 15 northern provinces; Bangkok faces 40% rain chance — confirmed details at this stage for Phuket readers.
Thailand’s Meteorological Department said on May 10 that heavy rain is forecast in 15 northern provinces over the next 24 hours, while Bangkok will see hot daytime weather with thunderstorms covering 40% of the area. In Phuket and across the Andaman coast, the forecast calls for thunderstorms over 60% of the west coast of the South, with heavy rain in some places driven by stronger easterly winds.
Phuket, southern seas and regional weather patterns
Phuket is listed with Phang Nga, Krabi, Trang and Satun among provinces on the west coast expected to see thunderstorms across 60% of the area. Temperatures there are forecast at 24-26C overnight and 33-36C during the day, with easterly winds of 10-30 kilometres per hour.
For the South’s east coast, thunderstorms are also expected in 60% of the area, with heavy rain possible in Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat. Seas in the Gulf of Thailand are expected to reach about 1 metre, rising above 2 metres in thundershowers, while the Andaman Sea is forecast below 1 metre except more than 2 metres in storm areas.
The department said upper Thailand will continue to see thunderstorms, gusty winds and isolated heavy rain because a high-pressure system or cool air mass from China is covering the Northeast and the South China Sea, while southerly and southeasterly winds are bringing moisture from the Gulf and the South China Sea. Dust and haze in upper Thailand remain at slight levels because of rainfall in many areas.
