Thailand’s Meteorological Department on May 16 warned of heavy rain in 36 provinces over the next 24 hours, with thunderstorms forecast across 60% of the Bangkok metropolitan area. The agency said stronger southwest monsoon conditions over the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf would bring heavier rainfall, while Phuket sits in the southern west coast zone with storms expected in 70% of the area.
Officials warned of isolated very heavy rain in parts of the North, Central Plains and East, with a risk of flash flooding and runoff near foothills, waterways and low-lying ground. Temperatures in Bangkok were forecast at 25-27C overnight and 34-37C during the day, with southwest winds of 10-20 km/h.
Provinces under the heaviest rain and rough-sea warning
The 36 provinces named for heavy rain were Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Tak, Kamphaeng Phet, Loei, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Chaiyaphum, Kalasin, Mukdahan, Roi Et, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Ubon Ratchathani, Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Kanchanaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Ratchaburi, Chanthaburi, Trat, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Ranong, Phangnga, Trang and Satun.
Upper Andaman waters were forecast at 2-3 meters, rising above 3 meters in thunderstorms, and small boats there were told to remain ashore. From Phangnga northward, winds were forecast at 20-40 km/h, while from Phuket southward seas were expected at 1-2 meters, rising above 2 meters in storm cells.
