Thailand’s Meteorological Department on May 14 warned of heavy rain and strong winds in 35 provinces over the next 24 hours, with Phuket among six west coast southern provinces facing thunderstorms and isolated heavy rain. Bangkok and nearby areas were forecast to see thunderstorms across 40% of the area, while stronger southwest monsoon conditions were expected over the Andaman Sea and southern Thailand.
The department said the South, especially the west coast, would see some heavy rain as the southwest monsoon strengthens. Officials also warned of possible flash floods and forest runoff in low-lying areas, near waterways and on foothills.
Phuket, Andaman Sea face rougher marine conditions
For the southern west coast, including Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Satun, thunderstorms were forecast across 60% of the area, with temperatures of 25-26C at night and 33-37C during the day.
From Phang Nga northward, southwest winds were forecast at 15-35 kilometres per hour, with waves at 1-2 metres and above 2 metres in thundershower areas. From Phuket southward, winds were forecast at 15-30 km/h, with waves around 1 metre and more than 2 metres in storm areas.
Elsewhere, thunderstorms were forecast across 60% of the North, Central and East, and 40% of the Northeast. Heavy rain was specifically flagged for Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Nan, Phitsanulok, Phetchabun, Tak, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Chanthaburi and Trat.
