Phuket City issued a red flood alert on 29 October as rising Bang Yai Canal levels and flooding closed Khok Tanot Road and blocked small vehicles in parts of Chalong.

UPDATE: Phuket red flood alert issued as flooding closes roads

Heavy rain in Phuket has developed into confirmed flooding, with Phuket City Municipality issuing a red flood alert for the Bang Yai Canal on 29 October 2026. At 7.40am, the municipality urged residents and businesses along the canal to move their belongings to higher ground as water levels rose.

The municipality said persistent heavy rain and substantial runoff from neighbouring areas had driven the canal up rapidly. It warned that further rain could send water into nearby homes and asked people to move electrical appliances, valuables and other possessions out of reach. Officials were monitoring vulnerable areas with other agencies and asked residents to follow official announcements.

Flooding also disrupted roads. Karon Municipality temporarily closed Khok Tanot Road because of risks to people and property. In Chalong, small vehicles could not pass through floodwater outside Wat Tai, formally Wat Latthiwanaram, and at the Khok Tanot traffic-light junction. Chalong Municipality advised motorists to avoid the junction and exercise extra caution.

The development follows flood and landslide warnings reported by Nation Thailand on 27 October 2026, citing the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), as heavy rain continued across southern Thailand.

The Thai Meteorological Department forecast thundershowers across 70% of the southern west coast, with very heavy rain in parts of Phuket. It attributed the unsettled conditions to a low-pressure area over the Andaman Sea and easterly winds across Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand. Waves could exceed two metres in thundershowers, and boat operators were advised to check their routes, navigate cautiously and keep small boats ashore.

Residents needing assistance in Phuket City’s Talat Nuea and Talat Yai subdistricts can contact the disaster-prevention service on 076-211111 or 199, or the municipal hotline on 1132. Karon’s disaster-prevention service can be reached on 076-330-913 or 199. Residents in vulnerable areas were also directed to the Phuket mobile weather-monitoring station’s online service to track Bang Yai Canal water levels.
