One Indian man died after five Indian nationals collapsed at a beach cafe in Kamala, Phuket, in the early hours of May 9. Police said they were alerted at about 2.06am after four members of the group lost consciousness, and rescue workers took the men to local hospitals, where Kushagra Agarwal was later pronounced dead at Vachira Phuket Hospital.
The others were identified as Rahul Agrawal, Rahul Agrawal, Agarwal Aman and Aryan Verma. Police said the group had been at the venue for a birthday celebration before the incident.
CCTV and tests shape investigation
Investigators said CCTV footage showed members of the group taking turns entering and leaving a restroom before they gradually collapsed one by one.
Police have ruled out food poisoning after finding no harmful substances in food or drinks served at the establishment. Preliminary blood tests found methamphetamine in the system of the dead man, police said.
Surviving members denied using illegal drugs and told investigators that the deceased had brought the substances with him. Authorities suspect narcotics consumed before the group arrived at the cafe may have been linked to the collapse.
Forensic doctors are due to carry out a detailed autopsy to determine the official cause of death.
