Police are investigating after four Indian tourists lost consciousness at a restaurant on Kamala Beach in Phuket early on May 9, and one of the men later died in hospital. Officers from Kamala Police Station and rescuers were sent to the beachfront venue after a security guard reported the incident.
The group had arrived at about 11pm on May 8, according to the guard. Four members then began losing consciousness at roughly the same time, from about 1.54am on May 9.
Hospital transfers and identities
Emergency responders took three Indian nationals to Patong Hospital and two others to Thalang Hospital for treatment. Khao Phuket identified the group as Kushagra Agrawal, Aman Agrawal, two men named Raghul Agrawal, and Aryan Verma.
Verma reportedly showed no symptoms during the incident. Two men first treated at Patong Hospital, Kushagra Agrawal and Raghul Agrawal, were later reported to be in critical condition and transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital.
Kushagra died at about 2.30pm on May 9. The remaining injured Indian nationals were reported to be in stable condition.
Cause of collapse still under investigation
Police have not confirmed what caused the group to lose consciousness. Investigators have informed the Indian Embassy in Thailand about the case.
An autopsy is being carried out on Kushagra’s body to determine the exact cause of death. Police have released no findings and no official conclusion on whether any substance or alcohol was involved.
