3 Indian tourists die after collapse at Kamala beach club in Phuket

Three Indian tourists died after four members of a five-man Indian group collapsed at Cafe del Mar Phuket on Kamala Beach early Saturday, police said. Pol Lt Wichayut Dampheuak of Kamala Police received the report at 2:06am on May 9, after the group had arrived at the venue at about 11pm on Friday.

Emergency responders from the Kamala Tambon Administrative Organisation gave first aid at the beach club before taking three victims to Patong Hospital and one to Thalang Hospital. Police said the unaffected member of the group was Aryan Verma.

Hospital tests found drugs in victims' systems

Kamala Police Chief Pol Col Anurak Prinyasathirakul said hospital tests later found drugs in the blood of all four men who collapsed. He said the results suggested a likely overdose, but the specific type, kind and amount of drugs could not yet be determined pending further medical examination.

Officers initially found the four tourists unconscious and unable to give statements. A forensic pathologist has been assigned to carry out detailed autopsies as investigators work to establish the exact circumstances of the deaths.

Transfers, identities and embassy notification

Later on Saturday, Patong Hospital told investigators that two victims, identified as Kuchakorn Agrawal and Rahul Agrawal, were in critical condition and had been transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital for further treatment. Police later received notice that Kuchakorn Agrawal had died at Vachira Phuket Hospital, and authorities subsequently confirmed that three of the Indian tourists had died.

Police identified the five Indian nationals as Kushagra Agarwal, Rahul Agrawal, another man also named Rahul Agrawal, Agarwal Aman and Aryan Verma. Pol Col Anurak said the duplicate name in the case file was correct because two of the men were relatives from the same family, and the Indian Embassy had been informed.
