UPDATE: Cracks reported in Krabi hillside homes after magnitude 6.8 quake in northern Sumatra
A magnitude 6.8 earthquake in northern Sumatra was felt across five southern Thai provinces, with cracks reported in hillside homes in Krabi.
A magnitude 6.8 earthquake in northern Sumatra, Indonesia, was felt in five southern Thai provinces on 15 August 2026, according to Thailand’s Earthquake Observation Division. Khaosod English later reported cracks in hillside homes in Krabi following the earthquake.
The earthquake occurred at 5.54pm, with its epicentre at latitude 3.03°N and longitude 99.11°E, at a depth of 175 kilometres. The division initially recorded the quake at magnitude 6.4 and a depth of 168km before updating the information.
Tremors were reported in Songkhla, Trang, Krabi, Phuket and Satun provinces. Near the epicentre, the division estimated maximum shaking of intensity VIII-IX on the Mercalli scale, which could cause severe building damage and partial collapses.
The earthquake did not meet the criteria for an alert through Thailand’s Cell Broadcast system.
