Magnitude 6.8 earthquake in northern Sumatra felt in Phuket
Tremors from a magnitude 6.8 earthquake north of Sumatra were felt in Phuket and four other southern Thai provinces on 15 August.
A magnitude 6.8 earthquake in northern Sumatra, Indonesia, was felt in Phuket and four other southern Thai provinces on 15 August 2026, according to Thailand’s Earthquake Observation Division.
The earthquake occurred at 5.54pm, with its epicentre at latitude 3.03°N and longitude 99.11°E, at a depth of 175 kilometres. The division initially recorded the quake at magnitude 6.4 and a depth of 168km before updating the information.
Tremors were reported in Songkhla, Trang, Krabi, Phuket and Satun provinces. Near the epicentre, the division estimated maximum shaking of intensity VIII-IX on the Mercalli scale, which could cause severe building damage and partial collapses.
The earthquake did not meet the criteria for an alert through Thailand’s Cell Broadcast system.
