The Monkey Hill temple LED upgrade was formally handed over on May 5 at Wat Charoen Samanakit on Toh Sae Hill in Phuket under the Provincial Electricity Authority’s “PEA LED for Thai Cultural Tourism Destinations” project. Phuket Vice Governor Teeraphong Chuaychoo presided over the ceremony, where officials said 487 LED lighting units were installed across the temple grounds at a cost of more than B1.99 million.
Mr Teeraphong said the project would support cultural tourism while reinforcing the role of religious sites as spiritual centres for surrounding communities.
Lighting aimed at safety, access and lower energy use
Officials said the new system is intended to improve visibility and safety around the hilltop temple, especially at night, while drawing attention to the site’s architecture and its setting above Phuket Town.
PEA Governor Mongkol Treekitjanon said the switch to LED lighting would reduce electricity consumption, cut maintenance costs and lower greenhouse gas emissions. He said the project aligns with national efforts to move toward a low-carbon society.
Temple’s landmark role drew broad official support
Wat Charoen Samanakit, also known as Wat Lang San, is regarded as an important religious and cultural landmark. Its location on Toh Sae Hill, a popular viewpoint and recreation area, makes it a regular stop for people visiting the area.
The hill is widely known as Monkey Hill because of the large troupe of macaques living there. Senior monks, including abbot Phra Kru Wimolchantharochoti, or Phra Ajarn Chamras Chanthochoto, joined the handover alongside clergy from across the region.
Phuket Provincial Administration Organisation President Rewat Areerob and representatives from multiple government agencies also attended. The PEA said it will continue similar LED upgrades at cultural tourism sites nationwide under its long-term sustainability strategy.
