Mutilated dugong found off Koh Yao Noi
Mutilated dugong found off Koh Yao Noi — confirmed details at this stage for Phuket readers.
A mutilated dugong was discovered floating near Koh Yao Noi, Phuket, on April 10, according to local marine officials. The endangered marine mammal showed signs of severe injuries, prompting an immediate investigation by the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR).
Investigation and Response
Officials reported that the dugong’s tail and flippers had been cut off, and deep lacerations were visible along its torso. The DMCR stated that these injuries were not consistent with boat propeller strikes, suggesting deliberate human involvement.
A necropsy was conducted at the Phuket Marine Biological Center to determine the exact cause of death. Preliminary findings indicated the animal had died within 24 hours of being found.
The DMCR has appealed to local fishers and residents for information and increased vigilance in the area. Dugongs are protected under Thai law, and harming them carries severe penalties, authorities said.
