Phuket advances sustainable living plan through public-private partnership

Phuket used a public-private forum in Cherng Talay on May 16 to press its sustainable living agenda, with Governor Nirat Pongsitthaworn outlining a vision for growth that pairs economic development with environmental responsibility. The “Sustainable Living In Action: NTCC x Sansiri Networking Night” brought together business and policy figures around Phuket’s wider push to become a smart city built on long-term sustainability.

Networking forum centers on urban design and environmental innovation

The event was jointly organised by the Thai-Netherlands Chamber of Commerce and Sansiri Phuket as a platform for exchanging ideas on sustainable urban development, housing design and environmental innovation.

Government officials, tourism operators, property developers and business representatives attended discussions on long-term strategies to improve quality of life while reducing environmental impacts.

Leading participants included Hans van den Born, Bhumichai Mathayomphobpinyo, Bjorn Courage and Piyapoj Supharitt. Bjorn also serves as general manager of InterContinental Phuket Resort.

Nirat said future development should focus on innovation in lighting systems, urban design and more efficient resource management to deliver measurable environmental benefits. He said a sustainable future city would require cooperation among the public sector, private business and civil society.

Separate waste initiative targets organic waste at source

In a separate development on May 15, Nirat and Wutthichai Bamrungrat met representatives from Prince of Songkla University Phuket Campus and the Phuket Environment Foundation at Phuket Provincial Hall to discuss a waste management project aimed at cutting organic waste at its source.

Officials said organic waste, including food scraps and plant debris, accounts for an estimated 35-65% of the island’s total waste volume and is a major cause of odour and wastewater contamination.

A workshop titled “Reducing Waste at Source in Phuket Province: From Origin to Sustainable Management System” is scheduled at the Phuket Provincial Local Administration Office. Local administrative organisations from across the province will be invited to help develop waste management models suited to conditions in each area.

The project is intended to move waste handling away from incineration and landfill use toward source-based reduction and reuse systems supported by data analysis and technology.
