Phuket alcohol sales exemption remains unclear without official designation

Phuket has yet to receive the official designation needed for an exemption from Thailand’s alcohol sales bans on major Buddhist holidays, leaving businesses uncertain about the rules, The Phuket News reported.

The issue resurfaced during a 48-hour nationwide ban covering Asarnha Bucha Day on Wednesday 29 July and Khao Phansa, or Buddhist Lent Day, on Thursday 30 July.

Although the government relaxed alcohol regulations in 2025 to permit sales in designated tourism areas on major Buddhist holidays, the exemption has not taken legal effect in Phuket because the required designation has not been issued.

While awaiting action from Bangkok, local authorities have adopted a practical approach under which businesses with valid entertainment establishment licences are regarded as clearly exempt. Restaurants, convenience stores, supermarkets and other general businesses have been warned not to sell alcohol on the five major Buddhist holidays.

Businesses violating the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act face up to six months’ imprisonment, a fine of up to B10,000, or both.
