Phuket allocates B4mn for 2026 road safety projects

Phuket has been approved for B4 million in Road Safety Fund support for the 2026 fiscal year, with provincial officials reviewing how the money will be allocated to projects aimed at reducing road deaths and injuries on the island.

The funding and proposed projects were discussed at a meeting of the Phuket Provincial Sub-committee for Considering Requests for Allocation of Funds from the Road Safety Fund at Phuket Provincial Hall on June 12. The meeting was chaired by Vice Governor Adul Chuthong before Phuket Land Transport Office Chief Adcha Buachan was assigned to continue chairing the proceedings.

Representatives from government agencies and related organisations attended to consider the management and allocation of the fund for road safety initiatives across Phuket. The committee also acknowledged the appointment of the provincial sub-committee and a working group responsible for screening, monitoring and evaluating road safety projects.

Officials reviewed progress reports on existing projects to ensure activities funded through the scheme comply with the fund’s regulations and objectives. The meeting heard that eight projects undertaken by seven agencies received more than B3.2 million in the previous allocation round, including road safety campaigns, public awareness activities and other initiatives intended to reduce road accidents in Phuket.

The committee then considered two new proposals for the current fiscal year. One, submitted by NBT Phuket, seeks funding to create a public relations network to promote road safety awareness among residents, tourists and tourism operators, with the aim of improving understanding of traffic laws and encouraging safer road-use behaviour.

The second proposal, submitted by the Phuket Land Transport Office, focuses on improving safety standards for public motorcycle services. The project is intended to improve safety among motorcycle taxi operators and passengers while helping reduce the risk of road accidents.

Committee members reviewed both proposals for compliance with Road Safety Fund criteria, overall suitability and potential public benefit. The meeting stressed that all allocations must be made transparently and efficiently, and that funded projects must deliver measurable improvements in road safety.
