Phuket faces thunderstorms and rough seas as monsoon strengthens
Phuket is forecast to see thunderstorms and isolated heavy rain, with Andaman Sea waves around two metres and higher during storms.
Phuket is forecast to see thunderstorms and isolated heavy rain on Thursday, 13 August, as a strong south-westerly monsoon affects Thailand and the Andaman Sea.
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) said thunderstorms would cover about 60% of the region, including Phuket, Phang Nga, Krabi, Trang and Satun. It warned that heavy and accumulated rain could cause flash floods and run-off, particularly near foothill slopes, waterways and low-lying areas.
From Phuket southwards, south-westerly winds are expected to reach 20–35 kilometres per hour. Waves should be around two metres and may rise above two metres during thunderstorms.
The TMD advised mariners to proceed with caution and avoid areas affected by thunderstorms. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand should remain ashore. The forecast covers the period from 6am on 13 August to 6am on 14 August.
