Phuket governor joins PTS Class 12 in releasing bamboo sharks to support marine conservation
Phuket’s governor and participants in PTS Class 12 released bamboo sharks back into the sea in a joint conservation activity with a Phuket marine research center.
Phuket’s governor and participants in the Advanced Political and Electoral Development Program, Class 12, took part in an activity to release bamboo sharks back into the sea in a conservation effort aimed at supporting a sustainable marine ecosystem.
According to the source, Pol Maj Gen Srisak said the activity was organized by trainees in the program, known as PTS Class 12, to encourage public awareness of the importance of natural resources, the environment and marine ecosystems. The event was held in cooperation with the Upper Andaman Sea Marine and Coastal Resources Research Center in Phuket.
He said the effort was intended to promote protection of the marine environment and rare marine species from extinction, while also building environmental awareness alongside sustainable tourism.
The release was part of a workshop under the PTS Class 12 program, with more than 20 participants traveling to study local work and carry out a public service activity, the source said.
Pol Maj Gen Srisak said the group also wanted to encourage both local residents and tourists to help preserve Phuket’s value as a destination known for its natural environment, world-class tourist attractions and distinctive local culture.
The source said bamboo sharks, although small marine animals, play an important role in the marine ecosystem by helping regulate populations of bottom-dwelling species such as shrimp, crabs, shellfish and other small aquatic animals, helping maintain natural balance. Their presence also reflects the abundance of coral reef ecosystems and marine resources.
The Phuket governor said bamboo shark numbers in the wild have declined because of environmental impacts, fishing and habitat degradation. He said the release reflected cooperation in marine resource conservation and efforts to raise awareness of the importance of preserving Thailand’s marine ecosystems sustainably.
