Phuket governor meets consuls to curb disruptive tourist behavior

Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat held talks with foreign consular representatives and key agencies at a seminar in Phuket Town on April 30 aimed at tackling disruptive tourist behavior. The meeting, titled “Integrating Confidence and Safety for International Tourists and Consular Operations in Phuket Province,” focused on conduct by foreign visitors that officials said harms public order and Phuket’s reputation.

The seminar at the Courtyard by Marriott Phuket Town was chaired by Governor Nirat and brought together Phuket Provincial Police Commander Pol Maj Gen Sinlert Sukhum, security officials, administrative and tourism agencies, and private sector stakeholders.

Governor orders strict enforcement of law

Governor Nirat said foreign nationals staying on the island must respect Thai law and local social norms. He said there would be no special treatment for offenders.

He instructed agencies to strictly enforce regulations in cases involving public disturbances, traffic violations, illegal work and other conduct affecting communities.

The governor also rejected claims circulating on social media that some foreigners believe legal problems can be settled with money. He said authorities operate with transparency and accountability and that no one can use money to avoid the law.

Monthly consul meetings proposed to improve coordination

Officials said managing tourist behavior is important not only for the island’s image as a world-class destination but also for safety and quality of life. The seminar gave consular officials a forum to raise concerns and suggest better ways to handle cases involving their nationals.

Governor Nirat proposed regular monthly meetings between Thai authorities and foreign consulates to improve communication, share information and respond more quickly to emerging issues.

Officials said closer cooperation with foreign missions and stricter enforcement would be central to reducing disruptive behavior. Authorities also reiterated that Phuket remains open to international tourism while maintaining order remains a priority.
