Phuket governor supports intern allegedly assaulted at Patong hotel

Phuket Governor Chotnarin Kerdsom has offered support to a 20-year-old student intern who was allegedly assaulted by supervisors in a hotel kitchen in Patong, Kathu district.

At a meeting at Phuket Provincial Hall on the previous afternoon, the governor presented the intern with a gift basket and financial assistance to support her continued education. He also directed relevant agencies to act swiftly to protect her rights and provide coordinated care.

Patong police are pursuing legal action in the case, according to the report. It drew national attention after a 15-second CCTV video circulated online. The footage allegedly shows a chef approaching the intern, slapping her on the head and striking her arm with a ladle as she tried to walk away.

Officials from Patong Police Station, the Phuket Provincial Social Development and Human Security Office, the Education Office and the Labour Protection and Welfare Office attended the meeting. They heard the intern’s account and reviewed assistance measures.

Governor Chotnarin said the case should be handled transparently and fairly under the law. He said agencies should coordinate support covering legal protection, labour rights, welfare, education and psychological recovery, while keeping the intern’s wellbeing as the priority.
