Phuket Kathu–Patong Expressway Project Expected to Reach Cabinet in Q4 2026

Thailand’s deputy transport minister said the long-planned Kathu–Patong Expressway in Phuket is expected to be submitted to the Cabinet for consideration in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Deputy Transport Minister Sornpetch Boonyamanee gave the update during a field visit to Phuket, where he inspected transport infrastructure progress, including deep-sea port development, and reviewed plans for the first phase of the expressway project.

He was joined by Deputy Government Spokesperson Ploytalay Laksameesangchan, local MP Chalermpong Saengdee, Phuket Transport Chief Atcha Buachan, representatives from the Expressway Authority of Thailand and other stakeholders.

Sornpetch said the Kathu–Patong route has long been a priority for Phuket residents and businesses because it is intended to ease chronic traffic congestion, improve travel convenience and strengthen the island’s transport capacity.

He said detailed studies are nearly complete, which would allow the project to move toward Cabinet submission later this year. If approved, construction would begin immediately and is projected to take four years.

According to Sornpetch, the project will follow principles of cost-effectiveness, transparency and accountability while maintaining safety standards. He also said that, despite any budget optimization adjustments, safety would not be compromised.

The Expressway Authority has also been assigned to study toll fee reductions as part of government policy aimed at lowering household costs. The source said preliminary rates are under consideration, but did not provide figures.

The government has also acknowledged proposals from local representatives, including using Patong Municipality roads as temporary routes during construction. Coordination with the Expressway Authority is intended to minimize disruption and maintain public convenience.

Sornpetch said the expressway would reduce travel times and support tourism and economic activity in Phuket.
