Phuket officials this week launched a cultural capital campaign aimed at turning the island’s artistic and heritage assets into a driver of sustainable growth, unveiling the project “Exploring Phuket’s Art and Traditions for Creative Tourism” at Blue Elephant Phuket. The initiative, led by the Phuket Provincial Cultural Office, sets out to frame Phuket’s lifestyle, traditions and community spirit through local artists under the concept “Living in Harmony and Art.”
Free public showcase set for May 15-16 in Phuket Town
A province-wide showcase is scheduled for May 15-16 at Saphan Hin in Phuket Town, running from 5pm to 8pm on both days. Organisers said the free event will bring together artists, learning centres and cultural groups from across the province.
The programme will include painting, sculpture, contemporary installations and traditional handicrafts. Environment-themed works made with recycled materials and live art performances are also planned.
Visitors will also be able to join interactive workshops and open-house tours of artists’ studios and learning centres. Organisers said the event is intended as a working platform connecting art with community life, environmental awareness and tourism development.
Officials tie arts strategy to tourism and regional cooperation
Vice Governor Adul Chuthong said the province is pushing collaboration at domestic and Asean levels, linking government agencies, private partners and cultural organisations. He said broader media exposure would be essential to raise the island’s cultural profile internationally and convert creative assets into economic value.
Acting Provincial Cultural Officer Supawadee Paipak said the project follows Ministry of Culture policy to protect and expand local artistic and intellectual heritage while tying it to tourism. She described creative tourism as a mechanism for adding value across the economic, social and cultural sectors.
Anchalee Vanich Thepbutr, president of the Phuket Arts Association, said the Thailand Biennale Phuket 2025 marked a turning point that put the island on the global art map. She said sustained coordination could help Phuket develop into a recognised art port city.
