A group of foreigners in Phuket was arrested by Patong Police on April 14 after a viral video showed them forcing open a van door and throwing water at the driver during Songkran Festival. The incident, which took place amid widespread celebrations, has led to public calls for tougher action against disruptive behaviour by foreigners in Phuket. Police charged the group with causing a public nuisance and obstructing traffic.
Viral Videos and Widespread Complaints
Multiple videos circulated on Thai social media showed similar incidents, including the group blocking roads, harassing motorists, and splashing water on a Thai woman riding a motorcycle before pouring shampoo on her head without consent. Another video captured the group surrounding a motorcyclist, repeatedly dousing him with water until he abandoned his vehicle.
ThaiRath published footage of foreigners, believed to be the same group, blocking vehicles and throwing water at a police checkpoint. Additional reports alleged the group demanded money from motorists and verbally abused those who refused to participate in water fights.
Penalties and Public Reaction
Police stated the maximum penalty for the offences is three months in prison and a 10,000 baht fine, but did not disclose the sentences given to the suspects. The case has triggered strong reactions online, with many netizens urging authorities to deport the group and add them to an immigration blacklist.
Several complaints were filed by both locals and tourists, citing concerns over the impact of such incidents on Thailand’s tourism image. Calls for stricter penalties reflect growing frustration over repeated disruptive behaviour during Songkran festivities.
