Phuket Nine-Year-Old Wins Two World Coding Titles

A nine-year-old student from Phuket has won two world titles at the 2026 International STEM Olympiad and Coding Olympiad, prompting praise from Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.

The student, known as Pace, or Pawin Phatthanwekin, is a Grade 3 pupil from Phuket. He won both titles in the competition’s final in Rome, Italy, defeating more than 38,000 contestants from 153 countries and over 1,700 schools, according to Ratchada Thanadirek, a spokesperson for the Office of the Prime Minister.

Ratchada said Anutin learned of the achievement before travelling to Shanghai, China, to attend the World AI Conference. The prime minister congratulated Pace and praised his ability, perseverance and determination, while also acknowledging the role of his family, teachers and other supporters.

The spokesperson said the achievement demonstrated the potential of Thai children when they receive appropriate opportunities and support. Pace competed against participants ranging from Grade 3 students to high-school pupils despite being only nine years old.

Pace has also won medals in coding, mathematics and science competitions at several international events, including three gold medals at a competition in New York last year.

Ratchada said the government would continue developing young people’s skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, as well as artificial intelligence. The Ministries of Digital Economy and Society, Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, and Education are expected to coordinate efforts to expand access to technology education for children and young people across Thailand.
