Phuket officials investigate Wichit condominium over alleged unlicensed daily rentals
Officials inspected a Wichit condominium after residents complained that rooms were allegedly being rented daily without a hotel licence.
Phuket officials are pursuing legal action against the operator of a condominium in Wichit after an inspection allegedly found rooms being offered for daily rental without a hotel licence.
The inspection took place on 29 July 2026 after residents complained about the property. Officials said rooms were being rented to guests daily, which may constitute operating a hotel without a licence under Section 15 of the Hotel Act.
Staff were present during the inspection, but officials said neither the owner nor the manager was at the property. Authorities recorded statements and collected evidence to submit to investigators.
Under Thai law, accommodation offered as a hotel business requires a hotel operating licence. Officials said operators who fail to obtain one may face criminal penalties, including fines and imprisonment.
The inspection formed part of Phuket’s continuing campaign against unlicensed accommodation businesses. Officials said the campaign supports efforts to improve tourist safety and promote fair competition among licensed accommodation providers.
