Phuket officials meet after Songkran incidents to tackle tourist misconduct

Phuket officials met on April 30 at Provincial Hall to address tourist misconduct after recent Songkran incidents in Patong sharpened concerns about behavior in crowded entertainment areas. Governor Nirun Pongsitthithavorn chaired the session with military, police, immigration, tourism and local administration officials, along with foreign community representatives, to discuss enforcement and communication measures.

Visitor pressure and coexistence concerns

Officials framed the issue against Phuket’s tourism scale. The province received more than 14.12 million visitors in 2025 and generated over 545 billion baht in revenue, while first-quarter arrivals this year reached 3.81 million.

Hotel occupancy averaged 83.39% in the first quarter of 2026. Governor Nirun said the island’s population of about 400,000 must coexist harmoniously with the millions who arrive each year, and that Thai and foreign nationals are subject to the same laws.

Enforcement focus after Patong cases

Authorities cited repeated problems involving behavior that damages Phuket’s image, especially in Patong, and said security agencies were ordered to strictly enforce the law and clearly explain local rules and prohibitions to visitors of all nationalities.

Officials said serious crimes committed by foreign nationals could trigger immigration review and possible revocation of residency rights. They added that offenses such as driving without a valid license would be prosecuted and sent to court.

The meeting followed several high-profile Songkran incidents. A Patong van driver said foreign revelers repeatedly sprayed water into his face and vehicle, and a separate clash at about 3:30 p.m. left a Thai man bloodied and injured after two French nationals allegedly attacked him when told not to spray water.

Provincial officials said the April 30 session also reviewed lessons learned from this year’s celebrations and ended with a call for cooperation between state agencies and foreign communities.
