Phuket opens auction for 503 lucky licence plates

Phuket has opened registration for an annual auction of 503 lucky vehicle licence plates, with bidding set for July 11 and 12 at the Royal Phuket City Hotel in Phuket Town.

According to the Phuket Land Transport Office, 301 plates in the new KhorTor (ขท) series will be offered on Saturday, July 11. The plates are for private passenger cars, pickup trucks and vans carrying no more than seven people. The office said the KhorTor series carries the meaning “Treasure of the Wealthy, Abundant in Money and Gold”, making the registrations especially attractive to motorists seeking auspicious numbers.

A further 202 plates from the special-case KhorKor (ขค), KhorNgor (ขง), KhorJor (ขจ), KhorChor (ขฉ) and KhorThor (ขต) categories will be auctioned on Sunday, July 12.

Both auctions will begin at 9am in Grand Ballroom 1 of the Royal Phuket City Hotel. Bidding will be available online through www.tabienrod.com and in person by verbal auction.

The Phuket Land Transport Office said registration is now open. Interested bidders can contact the office at 076-211019 ext 206, the Department of Land Transport hotline at 1584, or Line ID: dltphuket.

The annual licence plate auction is part of the Department of Land Transport’s effort to raise money for Thailand’s Road Safety Fund while giving motorists a chance to obtain sought-after registration numbers believed by many to bring good fortune.

Since Phuket’s first lucky licence plate auction, the events have raised more than B616 million for the Road Safety Fund, supporting road safety initiatives nationwide. Officials have said the auctions also help fund programmes aimed at reducing road accidents and improving road safety across Thailand.
