Police and forensic officers in Phuket uncovered 6.198 kilograms of heroin hidden inside Thai silk clothing at Wichit Police Station on May 5, officials said. The seizure followed a joint investigation by the Narcotics Suppression Bureau and local police after an airline employee, Mr Atthapol, reported the package on May 2 when he became suspicious of clothing he had been hired through Facebook to carry to Australia.
The shipment consisted of two sacks holding 48 ready-made Thai silk outfits. Investigators found the heroin concealed inside the linings of the traditional garments.
Courier tip and wider smuggling probe
Police said the package had been sent from Loei Province. Mr Atthapol handed it over for inspection after suspecting the contents might include illegal drugs.
Officers found no one to arrest at the delivery address in Thalang District because the intended recipient was reportedly already travelling. Pol Col Somsak Thongkliang said the case appeared linked to a sophisticated smuggling ring that uses people offering delivery services to move narcotics without their knowledge.
Forensic teams lifted latent fingerprints from the clothing and packaging to identify the original senders in Loei. Authorities believe the same method has been used at least three times before and said the investigation is being expanded to dismantle the network behind the attempted export.
