Phuket targets 120,000 ceremonial flowers for Queen Mother’s cremation
Production of dok mai chan sandalwood flowers is scheduled across Phuket from 28 September to 20 October 2026.
Phuket is targeting the production of 120,000 dok mai chan sandalwood flowers for use during the Royal Cremation Ceremony of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother. Production is scheduled to run from 28 September to 20 October 2026.
The target was announced at a regional pilot flower-making event at Wat Chalong on 25 September. The latest session was held on Wednesday, 30 September, at Wat Thepwanaram, also known as Wat Manik, in Srisoonthorn. Vice Governor Romdon Hayiawae, acting on behalf of Governor Chotinarin Koetsom, presided over the session, which involved government officials, women’s groups and volunteers.
The largest allocation is 108,000 hand-carved flowers for local administrative organisations and the private sector. Other assigned targets include 20,000 flowers from the Phuket Provincial Women’s Development Committee; 6,000 each from the Mueang Phuket and Thalang district women’s development committees; 5,000 from the Kathu District Women’s Development Committee; and 5,000 from Phuket volunteers and the Phuket Women’s Role Development Fund Steering Committee.
The Phuket Province Fan Club and the Phuket Elderly Volunteers for Community Development Club have each been assigned 1,500 flowers. The Occupational Group Network Committee and Phuket OTOP producers and entrepreneurs have a target of 5,000 flowers.
The flowers are being made mainly from locally available natural materials, including corn husks, dried napa cabbage leaves, banana leaves, rubber tree leaves and mulberry paper. Two designs are being produced: the “ueang phrao” orchid, designated as Phuket’s representative flower, and a rose design representing the individual districts.
The completed flowers will be distributed for use by members of the public during sandalwood flower offering ceremonies in local communities. Participants at the pilot and Wat Manik sessions were given instructions on the production process and guidelines before making the flowers together.
The Phuket Provincial Interior Ministry Spouses Association contributed B10,000 to support the project, while other organisations and individuals provided financial or material assistance. Officials at the latest event included Thalang District Chief Wilailak Ruangphon, Srisoonthorn Mayor Chalermphon Kerdsap and Phuket Provincial Community Development Officer Chaiwut Krutmas, as well as representatives of the provincial Red Cross and the flower-making committees.
The project is intended to involve members of the public, government agencies, businesses, educational institutions and volunteers in preparing the ceremonial flowers.
