Phuket recorded the highest cost-of-living-plus-rent index among five Thai cities in a March 2026 comparison cited in the expat guide Living in Thailand: The Real Pros and Cons for Expats, updated on 12 October 2026.

The comparison placed Phuket at 32.0, ahead of Bangkok at 30.2, Pattaya at 26.8, Hua Hin at 25.3 and Chiang Mai at 23.0. The figures are presented as a relative comparison rather than a personal monthly budget, with actual expenses depending on location and lifestyle.

The guide says Phuket attracts residents seeking regular beach access, but warns that island living can involve higher relative costs and more planning around transport. Neighbourhood, budget and daily travel needs can therefore affect the experience as much as the city itself.

It also identifies heat and humidity as practical considerations for people settling in Thailand. The guide notes that warm weather can support outdoor activities, while heat can make errands uncomfortable. Other issues for long-term residents include language barriers, visa paperwork, healthcare costs and the effort required to build a lasting social circle.

The guide contrasts Phuket with Bangkok, Chiang Mai and smaller towns, saying Bangkok offers a wider range of services and transport, while Chiang Mai provides a smaller-city setting but can face seasonal air pollution. Smaller communities may offer quieter routines but fewer specialised services nearby.
