Phuket traffic police officer injured in U-turn collision

Pol Sgt Maj Katapong Saiwijit, 32, a traffic squad leader with Phuket City Police, was injured in a U-turn collision on the inbound lanes in Ratsada at about 8:30pm on April 21, police said. The incident in Phuket involved a Phuket-registered car driven by 72-year-old Suthean Romyanankit, according to the official report.

Crash Circumstances and Investigation

Investigating officer Pol Lt Bandhita Thong-un stated that officers found Sgt Maj Katapong lying injured beside his police motorcycle after the collision. He was transported to Vachira Phuket Hospital, where doctors confirmed he had suffered a fractured jaw and was receiving treatment.

Police reported that Mr Suthean was exiting Soi Sakon Khet and attempting a U-turn in front of Nueng Yan Yon when his vehicle collided with the officer’s motorcycle, which was travelling from the Rajabhat intersection towards Phuket Town. A breathalyser test at the scene showed Mr Suthean had no alcohol in his system.

Investigators determined that negligent driving by Mr Suthean caused the crash, resulting in injury to another person. Police documented the scene and prepared an initial sketch, with legal proceedings to follow based on the findings, Phuket City Police confirmed.
