Phuket underpass lighting works completed after delay, penalty reaches B12.6 million

Lighting improvement works at all five Phuket underpass locations were completed on 28 August, eight days after the deadline set by Phuket Governor Chotinrin Kerdsum, officials said.
The governor confirmed the completion at the Phuket Provincial Joint Public-Private Sector Committee meeting on 3 September. The work is intended to improve lighting, visibility and safety for motorists and tourists using the underpasses.
Phuket Highways Office Chief Winai Kumueang said penalties continued to accrue until the works were officially completed. The total penalty reached B12.6 million, including B11.8 million calculated by the 20 August deadline and a further B800,000 for the subsequent eight days at B100,000 per day.
Better World Traffic Co Ltd was originally required to complete the B48.4 million Smart City traffic-management project by 24 April. The project includes replacing deteriorated underpass lighting and electrical systems, installing remote outage notification and carrying out other traffic-management work. Winai said delayed projects must be subject to penalties in accordance with the law.
