Phuket warns beachgoers after Portuguese Man O’ War spotted at several beaches

Phuket authorities on Friday, May 29, issued urgent warnings to tourists after several Portuguese Man O’ War were spotted at Nai Harn Beach, Yanui Beach and around Racha Island.

Lifeguards placed warning signs in the affected areas to alert visitors. The Portuguese Man O’ War, known locally as “fire jellyfish” or “Portuguese warship jellyfish,” is identified by a distinctive blue, balloon-like float.

Authorities said the marine creature is not a true jellyfish but a siphonophore. Its long tentacles can inflict painful stings that may be dangerous to humans, causing severe skin irritation and, in some cases, more serious medical complications.

Tourists were advised to avoid swimming in flagged zones and to use caution when walking along the shoreline. Local officials said anyone who is stung should seek immediate medical attention because the venom can cause intense pain and allergic reactions.

The warning comes at the start of the tourist season, when Phuket’s beaches are especially busy. Authorities urged visitors to remain vigilant and follow lifeguard instructions.
