Police committee visits Phuket City Police, reviews traffic and victim assistance issues
A police committee visiting Phuket City Police Station reviewed local policing, traffic congestion in Koh Kaew and ways to assist victims in the so-called “horse racing list” case.
A parliamentary police committee led by chairman Watcharapong Kuwijitsuwan visited Phuket City Police Station to review local policing, traffic problems and assistance for victims in a separate case involving migrant workers.
The delegation included committee members and Phuket MP Somchart Techathaworncharoen. It was welcomed by Phuket Provincial Police Deputy Commander Col Theerawat Liamsuwann, Phuket City Police Chief Col Chatree Chukaew and Thalang Police Chief Col Nikorn Chuthong.
Police officers briefed the committee on crime prevention and suppression, measures to protect residents and tourists, law enforcement operations, and the use of technology and management systems to improve policing efficiency and security across Phuket.
One of the main issues raised was Phuket’s traffic congestion, especially a proposed U-turn in the Koh Kaew area. Col Chatree said Phuket City Police had held extensive discussions with the Phuket Highway Department and local residents. Although the department was ready to seek funding, the project was shelved after public consultations failed to win enough support because some residents feared an overpass or underpass would harm the appearance of nearby homes and businesses.
Col Nikorn said Thalang Police had continuously deployed officers to manage congestion, but that a suitably located U-turn would significantly improve traffic flow.
Watcharapong said the committee would coordinate with relevant agencies and landowners to seek a solution benefiting the wider public.
During the meeting, Somchart also raised concerns about assistance for victims linked to the so-called “horse racing list” case, many of them migrant workers from other provinces. He proposed allowing victims to travel to Phuket to give testimony instead of returning to the province handling the investigation. Phuket City Police said they were prepared to cooperate within the law.
According to an official report, committee members also met police personnel to discuss operational challenges and suggestions for improving policing and public safety. Watcharapong said the visit was also intended to boost officers’ morale. He donated B10,000 to the “Police Families Don’t Abandon Each Other” welfare project.
