Rawai launches campaign to protect Promthep Cape palms

Rawai Municipality has launched a campaign to protect Palmyra palms at Promthep Cape from coconut black-headed caterpillars that have damaged the trees since 2024.

Phuket Vice Governor Romdon Hayiawae joined Rawai Mayor Thames Kraitas and agricultural officials at Promthep Cape on Thursday, 22 October 2026, to launch the programme. It combines chemical treatments with biological controls, including black earwigs and Bracon parasitic wasps, which attack the caterpillars or their larvae.

The campaign also includes pruning affected fronds, replacing damaged trees and asking the public to report signs of infestation. Romdon said the palms were an important part of Promthep Cape’s identity, complementing its sunset views and attracting Thai and foreign tourists. He called for cooperation among government agencies, farmers, businesses and the public to contain the infestation and preserve the landscape.

Rawai Municipality is working with the Phuket Provincial Agricultural Office, the Mueang Phuket District Agricultural Office and other agencies, according to Thames.

The municipality says coconut black-headed caterpillar larvae feed on palm leaves, often beneath silken webs. They strip away green tissue, leaving fronds brown, dry and damaged. Heavy infestations can weaken palms and hinder their growth, making early detection and control important.
