A 19-year-old South Sudanese man was arrested at a restaurant in a Thalang shopping mall after Phuket labor inspectors said he was working without a valid permit.
A 19-year-old man from South Sudan was arrested at a restaurant inside a shopping mall in Phuket’s Thalang District after inspectors found he was allegedly working without a valid permit.
Phichit Singthongkham, director of the Phuket Employment Office, said officials acted on a formal complaint that foreign nationals were working illegally at a restaurant in Srisoonthorn.
When inspectors arrived, they found several Thai employees and four foreign workers: two from Myanmar, one from the Philippines, and one from South Sudan.
Authorities said the South Sudanese worker, who had been employed at the restaurant for one week, was training staff when officers intervened. He was unable to present a work permit, officials said.
He was informed of his rights and the charges against him before being handed over to Thalang Police Station for legal proceedings.
Authorities also reminded employers and foreign workers to comply strictly with Thailand’s labor laws.
