Summer storm round to hit upper Thailand from April 28, forecasters say

Thailand’s Meteorological Department said on April 27 that a new round of summer storms will begin on April 28 and run through May 1, with upper Thailand turning hotter before thunderstorms, strong winds, hail and possible lightning move in. Phuket is forecast to see hot daytime weather with thunderstorms covering 30% of the area over the next 24 hours, with temperatures of 24-28C overnight and 35-37C by day.

Officials said the first impact zone will be the Northeast, North and East, with the Central Plains, Bangkok and nearby provinces affected later. The department linked the shift to a new high-pressure system, or cold air mass from China, spreading over the South China Sea and the Northeast while upper Thailand remains hot.

Heat, haze and regional forecast details

For the current 24-hour period, the North is forecast to reach 34-41C with thunderstorms across 30% of the region and south winds of 5-15 km/h, while the Central region is set for 37-40C with storms over 10% of the area and south winds of 10-15 km/h.

The Northeast is forecast at 34-37C with thunderstorms in 30% of areas and east winds of 10-20 km/h. The East is set for 34-37C with storms in 20% of areas, southeast winds of 15-30 km/h and seas around 1 meter, rising above 1 meter in thundershowers.

In the South’s west coast, including Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Satun, east winds are forecast at 10-30 km/h with waves below 1 meter, rising above 1 meter in storms. The department also warned that dust and haze in parts of the North remain above standard levels and advised people outdoors to wear N95 masks.
