Summer storm warning issued as severe weather threatens 65 provinces
Summer storm warning issued as severe weather threatens 65 provinces — confirmed details at this stage for Phuket readers.
Thailand’s Meteorological Department on May 9 warned that a summer storm will bring thunderstorms, strong winds, hail and isolated heavy rain across much of the country over the next 24 hours, with Phuket included in the southern forecast. The agency said the weather is being driven by a high-pressure system from China over the Northeast and South China Sea, while southerly and southeasterly winds are pulling moisture over upper Thailand.
Phuket and southern seas face heavy rain and rough storm conditions
On the Andaman coast, rain is forecast over 60% of the area, with isolated heavy falls in Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Satun. Temperatures are expected at 24-27C overnight and 34-36C during the day, with easterly winds of 10-30 km/h.
In the Gulf and the lower South on the east coast, storms are also forecast over 60% of the area, with heavy rain in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat. Waves in the Gulf are expected around 1 meter, rising above 2 meters in thundershowers, while the Andaman Sea is forecast below 1 meter except in storm areas where waves may exceed 2 meters.
The department advised people to avoid open areas, large trees, unstable structures and billboards during storms, and warned of possible flash floods and runoff near foothills, waterways and low-lying ground. Dust and haze in upper Thailand were reported at slight to moderate levels because some areas are seeing rain.
