Summer storms to hit North and Northeast; Phuket faces scattered rain
Summer storms to hit North and Northeast; Phuket faces scattered rain — confirmed details at this stage for Phuket readers.
Thailand’s Meteorological Department said on April 29 that summer storms will affect the North, Northeast and East over the next 24 hours, bringing thunderstorms, strong winds, hail in some areas and possible lightning. In Phuket and the wider South, the forecast calls for scattered thunderstorms instead, driven by southerly and southeasterly winds over the Gulf of Thailand, the South and the Andaman Sea.
The department said the unstable weather is being triggered by a new high-pressure system, or cold air mass, from China moving into lower China before extending over upper Laos, northern Vietnam, the Northeast and the South China Sea. Officials warned people to avoid open areas, large trees, unstable structures and billboards, while farmers were urged to protect fruit trees, crops and livestock.
Regional forecast gives Phuket a 40% storm chance
The Northeast faces the highest storm coverage at 60% of the region, with Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Udon Thani, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Ratchasima and Ubon Ratchathani among the provinces named. Temperatures there are forecast at 22-25C overnight and 33-37C by day, with southeasterly winds of 10-15 km/h.
The North and East are each forecast to see storms across 30% of their areas, while the Central region is at 20%. The western South, including Phuket, Phang Nga, Krabi, Trang and Satun, is forecast for thunderstorms across 40% of the area, with temperatures of 24-26C to 35-36C, easterly winds of 10-30 km/h and waves below 1 meter, rising above 1 meter in thundershowers.
Dust and haze accumulation has eased in the North, Northeast and upper Central region but remains at moderate levels, the department said.
