Teen arrested after attempted burglary at Phuket restaurant
Officers from Wichit Police Station confirmed the arrest yesterday (Apr 29), following an investigation into the incident that occurred in the early hours of Apr 17.
Wichit Police arrested a 19-year-old man yesterday, Apr 29, over an attempted burglary at a restaurant in Phuket after an investigation into the early-hours incident on Apr 17. Police said the suspect, identified only as Manas from Chalong, confessed during questioning and was charged with attempted theft at night using a vehicle.
CCTV footage showed the man entering Wai Photchana restaurant on Narang–Borrae Rd at about 3am. The break-in failed when owner Saiwai Chantharamuang, 46, who was still awake inside, came out and confronted him.
Owner confronted intruder with samurai sword
Saiwai chased the suspect from the premises while armed with a samurai sword. He struck the man once with the blunt side of the weapon in an effort to stop him from escaping.
The suspect got away with minor injuries. No property was reported stolen.
CCTV review led police to suspect from Chalong
Later on Apr 17, at 4:07pm, Saiwai filed a formal complaint with Wichit Police and asked officers to speed up efforts to identify and arrest the intruder.
Police said investigators reviewed CCTV footage and widened their enquiries before identifying Manas. Officers then tracked him down and arrested him.
Investigators are also examining whether he may be connected to other theft cases in the area. Police said additional charges may follow if further offences are uncovered.
