A Thai court on May 1 convicted Sararat, 39, of murdering Pol Capt Sukanda Wimolman by mixing potassium cyanide into a meal and drink consumed on Aug. 9, 2022, in the latest ruling in the cyanide serial killer case that drew national attention beyond Phuket. Judges imposed the death penalty, then reduced it to life imprisonment after finding she gave useful testimony during the trial.
That term was added to punishments already handed down in earlier cases: one death sentence and one life sentence for other victims. The ruling marked the third concluded case linked to the poisoning spree.
Police linked 15 poisonings across seven provinces
Police said 15 people were poisoned in seven provinces between 2015 and 2023, with only one survivor. Several cases remain pending.
Investigators said the killings were financially motivated and carried out to clear debts. They said each victim had been with Sararat only hours before dying.
The case first surfaced after Siriporn Khanwong died beside the Mae Klong River in Ban Pong district, Ratchaburi, on April 14, 2023, after the pair went to release fish for merit-making. Authorities said cyanide was found in Siriporn’s body and Sararat drove away with the victim’s belongings and cash instead of helping her.
Sararat, the wife of a high-level police officer, was four months pregnant when she was arrested on April 25, 2023. She later received a death sentence in Siriporn’s murder and life imprisonment for poisoning another police officer in Nakhon Pathom.
