Thailand weather alert warns of heavy rain in 41 provinces, rough Andaman seas

Thailand’s Meteorological Department on May 14 issued its third heavy-rain warning, naming 41 provinces including Phuket and forecasting stronger winds and rougher seas through May 18. The alert said rain will increase nationwide, with heavy to very heavy falls in parts of the North, Central, East and South from May 14-18.

Officials warned that accumulated rainfall could trigger flash floods and forest runoff, especially along foothills, near waterways and in low-lying areas. The department said the weather is being driven by a strong low-pressure cell over the lower Bay of Bengal moving toward the upper Bay, along with a strengthening southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand.

Andaman Sea waves to reach 2-3 meters

From May 15-18, waves in the Andaman Sea are forecast at 2-3 meters, rising above 3 meters in thunderstorms, the department said.

In the upper Gulf of Thailand, waves are expected at about 2 meters and above 2 meters in storm areas. Mariners were advised to proceed with caution and avoid thunderstorm zones, while small boats in the Andaman Sea were told to stay ashore during the period.

Phuket among 14 southern provinces flagged for May 14 rain

For May 14, the department listed Phuket among 14 southern provinces expected to be affected by heavy rain. The others were Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Ranong, Phang Nga, Krabi, Trang and Satun.

The warning also covered 11 northern provinces: Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Phayao, Nan, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, Phetchabun, Kamphaeng Phet and Tak.

Eight northeastern provinces were named: Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nong Bua Lam Phu, Udon Thani, Nakhon Phanom, Chaiyaphum and Nakhon Ratchasima. Two central provinces, Kanchanaburi and Ratchaburi, and six eastern provinces, Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat, were also included.
