Thunderstorms, strong winds to hit Thailand; heavier rain due in South — confirmed details at this stage for Phuket readers.
Thailand will see thunderstorms and strong winds in several areas from May 6-8, with heavier rain forecast in the South, the Meteorological Department said on May 4. In Phuket and the Andaman coast, the 24-hour forecast calls for hot daytime weather, thunderstorms covering 30% of the area, east winds of 10-30 kilometers per hour, seas below 1 meter and waves above 2 meters in storm areas.
Upper Thailand will remain hot during the day, with some northern and central areas facing very hot conditions, while scattered thunderstorms and gusty winds develop under a heat low-pressure system and moisture from southwest and southeast winds.
Southern rain, wave conditions and regional temperatures
The department said the South will see increased rainfall and isolated heavy rain from May 6-8 as an easterly wave affects the lower South. It warned of heavy-rain hazards and advised mariners in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea to use more caution and avoid thunderstorm areas.
Across the southern east coast, thunderstorms are forecast in 20% of the area, mainly in Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat. Temperatures there are forecast at 24-27C overnight and 34-38C by day, with southeast winds of 15-30 km/h and waves around 1 meter, rising above 2 meters in storms.
In upper Thailand, the North is forecast at 23-26C to 35-41C with storms in 10% of the area, while the Central Plain is forecast at 24-27C to 38-40C with storms in 10%. Air quality and haze accumulation in upper Thailand remain at good to moderate levels because some areas have had rain.
