Train driver tests positive after deadly Bangkok rail crossing crash

Thai authorities said on May 17 that the train driver in a deadly Bangkok rail crossing crash tested positive for illegal drugs after a freight train hit a public bus near Makkasan Station, an incident also drawing attention in Phuket because of wider rail safety concerns. The collision happened about 3:40 p.m. on May 16 at the Asok-Din Daeng Road crossing near the Airport Rail Link in Huai Khwang district, killing at least eight people and injuring about 30 to 32 others.

Police said the screening urine sample reportedly turned purple, a common local indicator in drug tests, with early reports pointing to cannabis and methamphetamine.

Charges filed against train crew and crossing operator

Makkasan Police said the train driver has been charged with reckless driving causing death and injury. He was injured in the crash and is receiving treatment.

On the evening of May 17, police detained Mr. Uten, a railway operations employee responsible for the crossing barriers, for questioning. He was later charged with reckless acts causing death and serious injury.

CCTV reportedly showed him waving a red flag only briefly before lowering it. Police said the crossing worker tested negative for drugs.

Traffic buildup trapped bus on tracks

Investigators said the State Railway of Thailand freight train, No. 2126, was traveling from Chachoengsao and Laem Chabang toward Bang Sue when it struck BMTA orange bus Route 206. The bus had become stranded across the tracks during heavy congestion, preventing the barriers from lowering fully.

The impact set off a fire that engulfed the bus and damaged nearby vehicles and motorcycles. Witness accounts and CCTV indicate the train did not slow or stop in time despite the warning, and officials are examining the train’s black box to determine speed and braking.

Police also charged the bus driver with reckless driving causing death. He survived, was injured, and remained unconscious and unable to answer questions. BMTA pledged compensation of up to 1.5 million baht to each deceased victim’s family.
