The Thai Meteorological Department on April 19 issued a warning for upper Thailand, forecasting summer storms with rain and strong winds across 41 provinces. The alert covers the Northeast and East, while Bangkok is expected to see maximum temperatures between 34°C and 38°C. Phuket and other southern areas will remain hot with isolated thunderstorms.
Regional Weather Hazards and Temperature Extremes
Northeastern provinces such as Loei, Nong Khai, and Udon Thani face a 40% chance of thunderstorms, strong winds, hail, and heavy rain, with highs of 32°C to 38°C. The East, including Chachoengsao and Chonburi, can expect storms in 30% of the area and temperatures reaching 39°C.
Northern Thailand, including Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, will see highs up to 42°C and a 20% chance of storms with occasional hail. Central provinces such as Lopburi and Ayutthaya may experience temperatures up to 41°C and brief afternoon storms.
Southern regions like Phuket, Krabi, and Trang are forecast to be hot with scattered thunderstorms in 20% of the area and highs between 34°C and 36°C. The Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand will see waves around one metre, rising higher during storms.
Air Quality Concerns in the North
The North, upper Northeast, and upper Central regions are experiencing dust and haze levels above safety standards due to persistent hot spots and limited air circulation. Residents are advised to avoid outdoor activities and wear N95 masks when outside.
