A 36-year-old woman was detained after her 74-year-old mother-in-law was killed at a house in Chalong, Mueang Phuket district, on 1 August, police said.

Chalong police received a report at 9.15am and sent officers and relevant agencies to the property. They found the victim, identified as Ms Chantra, dead inside the house with serious sharp-force injuries and blood on the floor.

An initial inquiry found that Chantra had been at home with her daughter-in-law, identified as Ms Sriwan, when the pair had a heated argument. Police said Sriwan then attacked Chantra, struck her with a knife and severed her head.

A neighbour who reportedly saw the incident alerted police. Officers found Sriwan hiding in the bathroom and detained her at the house before taking her for legal proceedings.

Investigators, forensic officers and an on-duty doctor examined the scene and the body. Police are continuing to investigate the cause and motive of the killing.
